(01)Our Story

More than a gym. A family.

The original Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in Stratford, Ontario, building confident, skilled, resilient people of every age and level since 2013.

(01)Our Story

Where it all started.

Stratford BJJ opened its doors in December 2013, founded by Ryan O'Shea with a simple idea: build a place in Stratford where anyone could learn real Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and feel like they belonged from the first class. More than a decade later, that is still exactly what happens on these mats.

We are a proud member of the Jiu-Jitsu For Life Team under Professor Jorge Britto, in the Royler Gracie / Vinicius Aieta (Gracie Tijuca) lineage. That connection matters: it means the technique you learn here traces straight back to the family that created the art, taught by coaches who hold internationally recognised ranks.

Over the years this academy has produced competitors, developed its own black belts and grown a community that shows up for each other on and off the mat. When the team later opened a second academy in Woodstock, it grew out of what we built here first. Stratford is the flagship, the original home of the program.

People call us a family, and they mean it. We celebrate every promotion, every first competition and every nervous beginner who keeps coming back. We also hold each other to a high standard, because that is what a real team does. Est. 2013 is not just a date on the wall. It is a decade-plus of doing this the right way.

(02)What Sets Us Apart

More than just training.

Three things you feel the moment you step on our mats, and the reason members stay for years.

01

A Welcoming Community

You feel the difference the moment you walk in. Egos stay at the door and everyone belongs, the teenager, the shift worker, the parent starting over at 45. New faces get partnered up and looked after, not left in a corner.

02

Expert Coaches

Internationally recognised ranks in the Royler Gracie lineage, with decades of combined teaching and competition experience. Patient teachers first, competitors second: they break things down so you actually understand them.

03

All Levels Welcome

A structured curriculum that meets you exactly where you are. Total first-timer or seasoned competitor, kid or adult: you train at the level that fits you and progress at a pace that sticks.

(03)Why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

The most practical martial art you'll ever learn.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is grappling, not striking. There are no punches or kicks: it is leverage, position and control. That single fact is why you can train it safely at near-full speed from your very first weeks: the tap is the off switch. When something is locked in, you tap, your partner lets go and you reset and go again. You get real, tested reps without getting hurt.

The great equaliser

BJJ is built on the idea that technique beats size and strength. Leverage and timing let a smaller, calmer person control a bigger, stronger one. It is the reason a six-year-old and a fifty-five-year-old beginner both thrive in the same academy:

  • Kids gain focus, balance and the quiet confidence that comes from knowing they can handle themselves.
  • Adults get a full-body workout that never feels like a chore, plus genuine self-defence skill.
  • Nobody is "too small", "too old" or "not athletic enough", the art is designed for exactly those people.

How we teach

Every class follows the Jiu-Jitsu For Life System, a clear path that has been refined for over a decade:

  • Dynamic warm-up: movement that prepares your body and teaches the mechanics you'll use that day.
  • Technique, broken into details: a coach shows the position, then the small details that make it actually work.
  • Paired drilling with progressive resistance: you practise with a partner, starting cooperative and adding pressure as you get it.
  • Optional live rounds: when you're ready, you test it for real. Never on day one, and never forced.

New students are paired with senior belts who guide them through their first months. You are never the experiment: you are looked after.

Belts are earned, not given

Promotions here run on a clear rubric, not attendance. To move up you show technical understanding, put in real mat hours and demonstrate live application under resistance. When you get a new belt at Stratford BJJ, everyone in the room knows you earned it, and so do you.
