(02)What to Expect

What a Youth BJJ class actually looks like.

At this age the pace picks up. Classes still start with a warm-up and a clear technique of the day, but now the focus turns to competition-ready technique and connected submission chains, sharpened through positional sparring where kids test what they've learned against real, controlled resistance.

A coach runs the room the whole time, and senior youth often step in to help. It's challenging without being chaotic, and every kid trains at a level that keeps them working, not overwhelmed.

(03)Is It For Me

Will it keep a 10 to 12 year old challenged and engaged?

Yes. Youth BJJ is real training, not babysitting. The technique is genuine, the progression is clear, and there's always a next thing to work toward, so kids stay hooked instead of bored. The same discipline and focus they build on the mats tends to carry straight into school and home.

For kids who catch the bug, there's an optional pathway toward competing when they're ready, with zero pressure if they'd rather just train. Either way, they belong to a team of training partners who show up for each other week after week.

(04)The Curriculum

What you'll learn.

Youth BJJ builds on the fundamentals kids bring up from the younger classes, then pushes into sharper, more connected jiu-jitsu.

  • Competition-focused techniques and connected submission chains
  • Positional sparring that builds timing and problem-solving
  • Leadership: senior youth help run the younger classes
  • Escapes and counters, so they're comfortable in every position
  • The same reliable format every class, so the learning compounds
(05)Class Times

When Youth BJJ runs.

Youth classes run through the week after school, so they fit around homework and family time. The full up-to-date timetable lives on the schedule page.

What to bring on day one.

Just athletic clothes, a t-shirt and shorts or leggings, plus a water bottle and a pair of flip-flops for walking off the mats. We provide a loaner gi for the free class, so there's nothing to buy before you start. Come with clean feet and short nails, and arrive a few minutes early so a coach can say hi and get your child settled.

(07)Where We Are

(08)Common Questions

Good questions, honest answers.

Yes. At ages 10 to 12 the pace picks up and the technique gets sharper, with competition-focused moves, submission chains and more positional sparring. Kids usually come up into Youth BJJ from Kids BJJ once they're ready for that step.

Not at all. Kids with a background in our younger classes fit right in, and complete beginners are just as welcome. A coach will start your child where they are and build from there, at their own pace.

No. Competing is an optional pathway for kids who want it, never a requirement. Most youth train purely for the skill, focus and friendships, and that's completely fine with us.

When they age out, they move into Teens BJJ, where the training keeps progressing with their skill and maturity. Many senior youth also start helping coach the younger classes, growing into real mat leaders along the way.
