(02)What to Expect

What a Kids BJJ class actually looks like.

Every class runs the same shape, so your child always knows what's coming and never feels lost. A fun warm-up to burn off energy and build coordination, a technique of the day broken down step by step, steady drilling with a partner, then live practice against gentle, age-appropriate resistance.

Kids are paired with a friendly training partner and a coach walks the room the whole time. There's no throwing anyone in the deep end, and the focus stays on learning, effort and having a good time.

(03)Is It For My Child

Will it make my child aggressive, and is it safe?

No, and yes. Jiu-jitsu is about leverage and control, not striking, so there's no punching or kicking to learn. Kids are taught to tap early and often, which means they build the habit of staying calm and stopping the moment a partner signals, long before anything hurts.

We hold a zero-tolerance policy on bullying: the lesson is always to walk away and never to start fights. And classes are grouped by age, so a 7-year-old is never on the mat with teens. What kids actually take home is confidence, focus and self-control, the exact opposite of aggression.

(04)The Curriculum

What your child will learn.

Kids BJJ is where the real foundation gets built. The format is the same every session, so the skills and the habits compound week over week.

  • Positions, escapes and basic submissions through steady drilling and live practice
  • An anti-bullying mindset, and the focus and self-control to match it
  • Youth belt promotions that mark real, earned progress as your child grows
  • How to move, fall and roll safely, so training builds confidence not bruises
  • The same format every class: warm-up, technique, drilling, live practice
(05)Class Times

When Kids BJJ runs.

Kids classes run through the week, after school and early evening, so training fits around homework and family dinner. The full up-to-date timetable lives on the schedule page.

What to bring on day one.

Just athletic clothes, a t-shirt and shorts or leggings, plus a water bottle and a pair of flip-flops for walking off the mats. We provide a loaner gi for your child's free class, so there's nothing to buy before you start. Send them with clean feet and cut nails, and arrive a few minutes early so a coach can say hi and settle any nerves.

(07)Where We Are

Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the heart of Stratford.

We're on Downie Street in Stratford, and we're proud to train kids from across Perth County, St. Marys, Mitchell, Sebringville, Tavistock and Listowel, with plenty of families making the short drive worth it. Free parking on-site, so drop-off and pick-up are easy.

(08)Common Questions

Good questions, honest answers.

Yes. Most kids who start here have never trained before, and plenty are quiet on day one. Classes are welcoming and low-pressure, a coach walks the room the whole time, and kids move at their own pace. Shyness tends to fade fast once they realize everyone is learning together.

Seven to nine is right in the sweet spot for Kids BJJ. Younger children usually start in Tots BJJ, where the format is built for shorter attention spans. When your child is ready for the next step up, they move into Youth BJJ.

Kids earn youth belt promotions that recognize real, earned progress. They're not handed out on a schedule, they reflect the skills, effort and attitude your child shows on the mat, which is exactly why they mean so much when they arrive.

It helps in two ways. Kids build the physical confidence to stay calm instead of panicking, and we teach a clear anti-bullying mindset: walk away, never start a fight, and use what you know only to protect yourself. That quiet confidence tends to carry into school and home.
